Ammonites are extinct members of the Cephalopod class. Modern members include nautilus, squid and octopus. They first appeared during the Silurian Period (425 million to 410 million years ago) and were abundant and widespread in the seas of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods (175 million to 65 million years ago). Ammonites are important index fossils.... that is, they often link the rock layer in which they are found to specific geological time periods.
These beautiful Ammonite Fossils were found in Madagascar in the Mahajanga Province. They are professionally cut in half and polished. With the ammonite at 2.49" (63.25mm), you can see that besides displaying them on the stands, they are also great for necklace pendants and all kinds of jewelry.
Calcite crystals form on the inside of the ammonite which is called "Ammolite". "Ammolite" is a rare and valuable opal-like organic gemstone. It is arguably the rarest gemstone on earth, rivaling the rarity of such gemstones as "Alexandrite" or "Red Diamonds". Because of the careful and detailed work to create this gorgeous design, we are able to offer this truly exceptional specimen resulting in capturing a piece of Madagascar's geological past.
